Yesterday, Tuesday 10th May, Convene visited Dublin Castle to attend the Chartered Governance Institute’s Governance Ireland Conference. Having recently attended CGI’s ESG Summit, we were excited to take advantage of this new opportunity to connect with peers and colleagues on the future of governance.

We arrived at the conference prepared to share ideas on the evolution of governance. As Convene is about collaboration, we were excited to connect with governance professionals on contemporary issues. While 2021 was a year for change, 2022 was the year to consolidate future aims and address challenges directly.

Many of the talks at the conference addressed the importance of incorporating positive habits into organisational culture to pave the way for future improvement. This ranged from dealing with diversity and inclusion through the gender pay gap to the impact of shareholder activism on businesses.

Convene’s own sponsored talk was on an issue which is close to our heart: governance challenges for charities. This involved a panel discussion on governance challenges for charities and a consideration of the Charities Amendment Bill. As we have many clients within the not-for-profit sector, we recognise the difficulties of staying one step ahead when it comes to compliance.

The panellists, Diarmaid Ó Corrbuí, CEO at Carmichael and Carol Moore, CEO at Irish Kidney Association, held an engaging conversation on this complex topic. Led by Ivan Cooper, Director of Public Policy at The Wheel, they discussed the unique nature of charitable governance. We learned much about the past, present and future of governance in the sector.

Overall, the conference was a great opportunity to learn more about the practical steps necessary to move forward. Governance can be a challenge but it is an absolute necessity that organisations get it right the first time.

We are excited to see how the developments explored at the conference will play out in the next year! Thank you to the organisers and attendees at the conference - we look forward to seeing you again soon!
